Epistemic Dispositions

چکیده
In Briggs and Nolan 2012, we suggested that advocates of a Nozickian tracking theory of knowledge might do well to appeal to dispositions rather than counterfactuals. (Gundersen 2003 and 2010 makes a similar suggestion, though he prefers a dispositional account of counterfactuals that enables him to retain a conditional tracking analysis.) John Turri (2012) and Ben Bronner (2012) have offered a series of purported counterexamples to the dispositionalised Nozickian view we suggest.

Epistemic Dispositions. Reply to Turri and Bronner
We reply to recent papers by John Turri and Ben Bronner, who criticise the dispositionalised Nozickian tracking account we discuss in “Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know.” We argue that the account we suggested can handle the problems raised by Turri and Bronner. In the course of responding to Turri and Bronner’s objections, we draw three general lessons for theories of epistemic dispositions: that...

Discussing the notion of “epistemic emotions” as proposed by Morton (2010), and his argument for which intellectual virtues will be “hard to attain” without those emotions, I introduce the thesis for which epistemic emotions constitute one of the building blocks of intellectual virtues, in order to provide an explanation of the cognitive process that binds the two. Epistemic emotions are buildi...
متن کاملRoutes of Motivation: Stable Psychological Dispositions Are Associated with Dynamic Changes in Cortico-Cortical Functional Connectivity
The present study provides a neurobiological framework to the theory of epistemic motivation that has been extensively studied for the last three decades in the domain of social cognition. Epistemic motivations affect the way people generate and validate hypotheses, and ultimately form and modify knowledge. Strong dispositional measures such as need for cognitive closure (NCC), the desire for a...
متن کاملThe Reflexive Theory of Perception
John Dilworth, draft only, 7/04 The Reflexive Theory of Perception (RTP) claims that perception of an object X by an organism Z consists in Z being caused by X to acquire some disposition D toward X itself. This novel, purely naturalistic perceptual theory explains perceptual intentionality, correct versus incorrect perception and externalist content in a plausible evolutionary framework. The t...
متن کاملIngvar Johansson , Bertin Klein , and Thomas Roth - Berghofer
In order to develop the ontology of tendencies for use in the representation of medical knowledge, tendencies are compared with other kinds of entities possessing the realizable-realization-structure, specifically: dispositions, propensities, abilities and virtues. The peculiarities of tendencies are discussed and a standard schema of tendency ascription is developed in order to represent the r...
